Our Philosophy
To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”- Nelson Mandela
The History
"The Worms" (Los Gusanos in Spanish), a nickname given by Fidel Castro at the beginning of his social revolution in Cuba, refers to all the people who did not accept his political ideas and refused to submit to a life without freedom, traditions, or the violation of human rights. As a result, many Cubans left their homeland to escape the new political regime that began to deprive them of their liberty and human rights. Every human being is born to be free. The Cuban worms traveled in search of a new beginning and the promise of a brighter horizon where the sun shines on everyone."
"The leader of the new political system in Cuba probably did not realize that his derogatory metaphor would eventually lead to the realization of the people's dream for a life where freedom can flourish. In Florida, Cuban exiles who were nostalgic for their homeland took root and grew a new community without chains and fear. Fear is known to be detrimental to psychological balance as it can paralyze the mind. This situation reminds me of a vital lesson taught by the prophet Buddha. The Cuban exiles laid the foundation for this community existence, which could be seen as a metaphorical tree of life."
"You are the community now. Be a lamp unto yourselves. Be your own refuge. Seek no other. All things must pass. Strive diligently. Don't give up."
Concept: Just as humans have transformed life and the world by the need to share their ideas and experiences through communication, the concept of " The Worms” was born, where with a mix of cultures, diversity, color, thoughts, gender, and feelings, moved by love and the desire to live (in a society free of thoughts), on a night of laughter and dreams, we recognized our true identity: we are “The Worms” of essence and heart, and as authentic worms, we were born again like the Phoenix from the ashes.
The happiness of life is not woven with political ideologies or promises. Happiness is tangible, it is felt, it is palpable, even on the skin. A Spanish philosopher, opposed to any regime that deprives of freedom wrote:
"Happiness is something that is lived and felt, it is not something reasoned or defined." - Miguel de Unamuno
After releasing our desires and accelerated thoughts with the excitement of the idea itself of being able to express through clothing all the phrases and artistic creations that reflect Love, Joy, Humor, Education, Free Thought, Inclusivity, Contemporaneity, Renewal; Climate and Environment; Economy, Politics and Society; Sustainability and Nutrition; Personal Growth, we undertook the task of materializing that concept and philosophy that had been taking shape within us.
"The Worms" (Los Gusanos) employ everyday phrases, slogans, and life experiences from Cuba, and ultimately, from around the world, as a tool for criticism and education. In this spirit, every garment and object is crafted to convey the ideals we seek and discover. Here, we are free to express ourselves in a positive and educational manner, lending our unique voice to clothing that not only provides comfort but also communicates a message. Florida, in America, stands as an ideal backdrop, reflecting diverse influences – African, European, indigenous, and Hispanic heritage.
